The Studio

Lee Anchor is an emerging ceramic sculptor based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, working from Sentient Form Studio. After more than 27 years working in architecture and interior design, including 16 years as a registered architect in Australia (2008–2024) and teaching Light and Colour Studies at QUT, Lee completed a Diploma of Visual Arts at TAFE Queensland, Nambour, in 2024, and began developing her practice as a figurative ceramic sculptor.

Working primarily with hand-built stoneware clay, Lee is drawn to the human figure as a way of exploring identity, resilience, diversity and the lived experiences of women. Her sculptures combine realistic modelling with symbolic and expressive elements, often using the figure to communicate stories that extend beyond the individual sitter or character.

Her current major body of work, 30 Women, 30 Careers – Celebrating Diversity, explores the many professional and life roles of women through 30 figurative sculptures. The project reflects Lee's interest in giving visibility to women whose contributions and experiences are not always represented in public art.

Lee's studio practice is centred on developing large-scale figurative sculpture, with particular attention to anatomy, structure, surface detail and the relationship between the physical form and its narrative. She continues to develop her technical knowledge of large-scale ceramic construction, drying and kiln processes while building towards future exhibitions and a professional sculptural practice.

Process

Every piece is hand-built from a block of clay. A single sculpture often takes weeks to months to build, and months more to dry slowly and evenly before it's stable enough to go into the kiln for bisque and glaze firing.

Lee had no prior experience working with clay before starting her Diploma of Visual Arts at Nambour — she fell in love with it from the moment it was introduced in that course. Everything she makes now is an extension of what she learned there, with her skills still developing through ongoing trial and error.
