A series in development
The struggle within us — an emerging body of figurative sculpture exploring the spiritual and human struggle between temptation and faith, sin and redemption, darkness and light, and the choices we make throughout our lives.
Rooted in my Christian faith, this series is inspired by my belief in God the Father and Jesus Christ, and in the possibility of freedom, forgiveness and transformation through Christ.
I am interested in the invisible battles that take place within us — the temptation to return to destructive habits, the conscience that warns us, the forces that pull us away from what is good, and the strength that comes through faith to choose another path.
Through the human figure, I want to give physical form to experiences that cannot normally be seen: temptation, sin, spiritual conflict, faith, surrender, redemption and hope.
Some sculptures may depict the human figure caught between opposing influences — with representations of good and evil, light and darkness, or spiritual forces positioned around or behind the figure.
One planned work explores a man confronted by both good and evil influences as he faces a moment of choice — whether to give in to temptation and drink, or to resist it and choose another path.
The intention is not simply to portray a person making a decision, but to explore the spiritual battle behind that decision.
The first concept developed for the series is a figure emerging from broken chains, with his arms raised towards heaven and a cross at the centre of his body.
The figure is no longer defined by the chains that bound him. Through Christ, he finds the possibility of freedom, renewal and redemption.
This work is a visual expression of my belief that, with Jesus Christ, transformation is possible.
As the series develops, each sculpture will explore a different moment in the human and spiritual journey. The works may examine:
Each sculpture will tell its own story rather than simply illustrating an idea. I want the viewer to recognise something of their own struggle, choices and capacity for change within the figure.
This is a work in development. At present, the series has begun with concept drawings and ideas for future sculptures, including Freedom & Redemption.
As I continue developing the series, new figures, relationships and narratives will emerge. Some may represent moments of temptation and conflict; others may move towards faith, freedom, forgiveness and redemption.
The series will therefore evolve gradually through drawing, modelling and sculpture, allowing each work to develop its own story and visual language.
For me, Good & Evil is ultimately about choice — the choices we make, the forces that influence us, and the hope that even when we have been bound by darkness, there remains a path towards freedom through faith in Jesus Christ.
