Balsa wood, 1:20 scale — 2013
Designed and made by Lee Anchor
A scale model built to understand residential timber framing from the inside out — every stud, plate, truss, batten and brace cut and placed by hand.
Australian Standard AS 1684, Residential Timber Framed Construction, covers timber framing for residential projects up to two storeys. The standard sets member sizes according to the wind classification of the site, its location and region within Australia, the surrounding topography, the terrain category, and whether the area is cyclonic or non-cyclonic.
Working at 1:20, every member had to be sized from the standard and cut individually — stumps, bearers, floor joists, bottom and top plates, common and jamb studs, lintels, noggings, rafters, roof trusses, battens and bracing panels. A schedule pinned beside the model records each member and its dimension.
